Solving for Awareness

Conservation is often a silent struggle, hidden by a lack of public awareness. While the interest in helping is nearly universal, many people remain unaware that the fireflies they admire are currently endangered. There is a need to bridge this information gap through data and community engagement. A successful solution must make ecological health visible and actionable, turning every sighting into a step toward habitat protection.

Identity

Lampyri is an application designed to help users discover and experience firefly habitats while prioritizing ethical conservation. By combining environmental data with community-sourced sightings, the app identifies ideal viewing conditions while educating users on how to protect these endangered insects. Lampyri also features sponsored locations, to promote safety and community among firefly fans.

Team Roles

Isaias Perez: Designed and prototyped the Lampyri mobile app. Produced 3D Assets and a promotional video.

Sarah Manning: Led comprehensive research into firefly viewing and conservation habits. Designed physical merchandise and mockups.

Shayne Sutton: Provided illustrations used for safety and conservation graphics in the app.

Research

To understand the relationship between nature lovers and firefly conservation, our team conducted a user survey with 34 respondents to identify barriers to viewing and opportunities for digital intervention.

The Awareness Gap: Our research revealed a significant disconnect between user interest and ecological reality.

  • 70% of respondents were unaware that fireflies are currently endangered.

  • Once informed, 96.7% of users expressed a direct interest in contributing to conservation efforts.

Technology Outside: We looked at how users already use their devices outdoors to ensure Lampyri felt like a natural extension of their behavior.

  • Photography and social media posting are the primary ways users engage with nature through technology.

  • Having a phone for GPS, safety, and flashlight use was cited as a non-negotiable for night outings.

  • Standard phone flashlights are harmful to firefly mating cycles, confirming the need for a dedicated Night Mode system.

Data to Design: These insights directly informed our core features.

  • Addressing the 70% awareness gap through integrated conservation tips.

  • Replacing harmful habits with our habitat-safe Night Mode.

  • Facilitating the sharing aspect through a dedicated post feeds.
